PRESS RELEASE:

New biography tells fascinating tale of love, commitment and a family’s quest to follow its dream

Jean Nestares Phelps honors the life and times of ‘Opa: The First Modern Entrepreneur of Venezuela’

NORWALK, Conn. – Jean Nestares Phelps, artist and author of “Taking Flight,” “The Art of Falconry” and “Tick-Tock, Tick-Tock… Blue Planet,” marks her return in the publishing scene with the release of a biography that pays homage to the origins of the Phelps family and honors the life and times of William H. Phelps, affectionately known by his family as “Opa” (published by Xlibris).

The book tells a fascinating tale of love, commitment and a family’s quest to follow its dream. In here, readers get a glimpse of the extraordinary life story that took Opa from his native New York to Venezuela at the beginning of the 20th century where he became a visionary entrepreneur and a renowned ornithologist. His love for Alicia draws him back to Venezuela, a country he had traveled to initially for another love — his passion for birds. During his journey, Opa has to develop his inner entrepreneurial talent, using all his physical and mental strength to provide for his family while striving to accumulate enough wealth to allow him to chase his other love — ornithology. All these expeditions and experiences led him to become the first modern entrepreneur of his adoptive country.

“My great-grandfather Opa, not only created a successful family business, he also proved that if you work hard, you can make your dreams happen,” shares Nestares. “In his case, he was able, at the age of 62, to become an ornithologist which is what he wanted to do since he was 18.”

Nestares also feels that publishing the journey of “Opa: The First Modern Entrepreneur of Venezuela” is particularly timely as Opa’s adoptive country, a country of natural wealth and opportunity, is now in shambles after years under a cruel, corrupt and inept dictatorship which has turned one of the world’s richest countries in one of the poorest.

LIQUID CITY BY JEAN NESTARES

Soho Photo Gallery on May 2015:                                                                                                     http://www.sohophoto.com/exhibitions/upcoming/

---------------------------------------
I dreamed of a liquid city without parallels or perpendiculars. A liquid urbanism with living water and cooling system connected by an intricate canal network; a liquid city where I could change the fundamental emphasis of the flow, rather that the spaces and structures . Even in terms of infrastructure, cities are all about movement, flow and transportation rather that a static existence…
Today, urban flow is evolving into an elaborate idea of the city as a circulatory system of multiple streams. Design is increasingly interested in flow dynamics, liquid materiality, and urban metabolism, whilst contemporary urban waterscapes play a critical role in urban renewal and vitality.

Liquid City is a body work of 19 double exposure photographs made with a Diane+ 120mm film.

Limited edition of five photographs in two sizes: 10x10 inches ( 25x25 cm ) and 20x20 inches ( 50x50 cm ) are available.

DREAM CHASER

I have been thinking about new ways to create pauses and silences where breath is held in my artistic world that has always been inspired by movement. In this series of natural images, untouched by any manipulation, I create the sensation of a double dimension by superposing images on fabric and paper. My photographic Dream Chasers will open new windows into yourselves: through them, you will be able to travel further than the images that first impact you and see what your inner self is capable of seeing, you will feel the essence of the dream. Take this journey through my Dream Chasers.
